Breaking the Habit. Building the Foundations.
The number 1 thing that limits us as humans is the way we manage our habits.
There are 2 simple types of habits, the good habit and bad habit.
Most people subconsciously develop bad habits and stick to them for a long period of time, which is why it’s so difficult to break these habits. For example, scrolling through Instagram for hours throughout the week (they call it ‘doom scrolling’ for a reason).
Once we are aware of these bad habits we tend to think about how we can ‘break’ these habits. But if we were to change our perspective and focus on developing more ‘good’ habits, then those bad habits will naturally fall away. After all, we only have so much time in our hands, and if we were to focus on the good stuff, we won’t have time to execute any other habits other than the good ones.
Accordingly to many successful people in the world, their biggest method of success is managing habits and gradually improving their lives one step a day. When we try to rush into getting into a habit, we may be motivated for 1-3 days, but then burnout sweeps in interferes before we can see actual results.
We tend to be demotivated when we don’t see results of our efforts. We need to realize that habits and progress are like compound interest (we will talk about compound interest on a different post soon). But basically it looks like this:
This is why most New Years Resolutions fail because, we give up before we build up the habit on the first month.
We will dive deeper into how we can better manage our habits using systems and not goal-driven motivations on following blogs.
