An infinite loop

We tend to use the word “perfect” or “perfectionist” without much thought.

I believe that “perfection” is nothing but an illusion that we are chasing. No one and nothing is “perfect” or can be “perfect”. We can chase after that illusion but all we are putting ourselves in is an infinite loop.

I am a musician and I have heard the phrase “practice makes perfect” far too many times than I can count. Of course practicing and honing a craft is incredibly important, but why reach for something that is unreachable?

You may be wondering…”Jamie, why are you being so pessimistic?”.

Let me give you a personal example.

When I was recording a part for a song in my music software, after each take I tend to tell myself, “argh, but I can do better” and start going on a frenzy of recording the same part over and over again. The same can be said for writing lyrics. You write down the lyrics as you feel and then you start having so many mixed feelings that you end up changing so much that it changes the meaning behind the song entirely. This is the infinite loop. Unless you are able to settle for something and break from that loop, you will ultimately come out with no results…no song.

There is the famous story about how Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (Thriller Album). The song was produced by Bruce Swedien. Bruce curated multiple successes with the likes of Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughn, Tyrone Davis, and plenty more. However during the Billie Jean project, being a “perfectionist”, Bruce mixed 91 unique versions of the song because he didn’t think it was “perfect” after every mix. After listening to all 91 versions he ended up finally choosing the 2nd mix…sometimes you just have to go with your gut.

Anyone who has worked on a form of creative work (music, art, design, video etc.) will understand what I am talking about.

But this isn’t just about music, the same principle lies in our day to day lives.

You come up with a business idea, you are excited, but end up never even starting “because of this” and “but then this”.
You have an opportunity to interview for dream company but you are scared they won’t think you are good enough or that you won’t be able to make a good impression…and the list goes on…

Rather just start it, do it and then even if you failed, at least you learned something from it.
It’s much better than regretting that you never tried in the first place because opportunities rarely come twice and you can’t turn back time.

Remember, the best way to learn is from experience and no amount of money in the world can buy experience.

I would love to hear what your thoughts or experiences are on this topic.
